In April 2008, One D partners New Detroit, the Detroit Regional Chamber, and the United Way hosted a “Dropout Prevention Summit and Retreat” in partnership with the America’s Promise Alliance, Skillman Foundation, and Detroit Parent Network to create a broad and deliberate response to the unacceptably high dropout rates at high schools around the region.
The second day of the Summit gave local school teams the opportunity to begin planning their own school turnaround solutions. Successful turnaround plans must do the following: Change Conditions, Build Capacity and Create Clusters of Support.

The work performed on that second day establishes the foundation for the ongoing team effort of planning and implementing turnaround solutions at each of the schools. During that day we also held sessions around community engagement specifically focusing on youth, getting the word out, community leaders and legislators.
